Subdivision Improvements
Last updated July 2024
Planned improvements within the Wedgwood Subdivision continue into the summer and fall. Thanks to the active participation of many involved residents, progress is being made to enhance the image and safety of our subdivision.
Here are some of the current and on-going projects.
Entrances at New Castle Drive and Wedgwood Drive West, off of New Halls Ferry Road
New lanterns installed on the monument pillars, completed in February 2024
New, more distinctive Wedgwood signage at both entrances, completed in March 2024.
New flood lighting was installed to shine up onto the new signage. Adjustments are being made to angle the lights so as to not shine in the eyes of drivers coming into or out of the subdivision.
Where the blue cameos once hung on the walls, you now see flat, white concrete spaces (instead of brick). Research is on-going to find the best way to make those spots less conspicuous, including the use of landscaping materials.
The very unsightly short bollard posts and chains have been removed at New Castle and Wedgwood Drive West.
Landscaping is being planned to enhance both entrances where there are monuments at New Castle Drive and Wedgwood Drive West. Due to timing conflicts and the heat of summer, plant installation had to be postponed. The current plan is for a Fall 2024 installation. Two main goals are to use perennial plant products that are heat tolerant, and to display color as much of the year as possible, even if some months may be just evergreens.
In May 2024, new heavy gauge vinyl fencing was installed to replace the old concrete fencing along both sides of New Halls Ferry Road, from Bradwell to Wedgwood Drive West. The new vinyl fencing is the same two-rail style as the original concrete fencing. The concrete fencing was very difficult to repair/replace and almost every rail was deteriorating. The vinyl fencing takes less time, effort, and money to replace when needed.
Wedgwood Park
The Wedgwood Neighborhood Park is located at the intersection of New Castle Drive and Churchill Drive, at the far east end of the subdivision. Several improvements are being planned for the park, each at varying schedules. Some have already been completed.
The old BBQ grill has been replaced with a much larger and substantial two-sided grill. It was set in a large platform that keeps you on sound footing while you grill.
A decayed wood bench near the swings was replaced with a new plastic coated steel bench. A second new bench was added near the base of the entrance driveway, adjacent to the parking lot. It was noted that folks sometimes visit the park to enjoy their lunch near this shady spot.
New park signage has been installed, stating park hours (8 am to Dusk) and restrictions (no dumping, littering, glass).
Refurbishment of the playground equipment is being scheduled for new paint as well as new chains and seats for the swings.
Refurbishing one of the two ball fields and backstops, tentatively.
Satellite Park at Avon Court
This small park is in plat 12 in the southwest section of Wedgwood, near the entrance at Thunderbird Drive. In late 2023, volunteer trustees rebuilt the original flowerbed in the center of the park with landscape stones, and then added perennial liriope plants. The original flowerbed was built decades ago using wood landscape timbers, which had since rotted and disintegrated. A park bench sits adjacent to the flower bed, a perfect spot to stop and rest on your neighborhood walks.
Satellite Park at Brookshire and Brunswick Drives
This park is located in plat 5, at the northernmost section of Wedgwood, on the west side of New Halls Ferry Road. Four dead trees are being removed, including grinding of the stumps. Plans call for two park benches to be installed.
Streetlights (solar)
Installation of more streetlights has been a longtime goal of the HOA and the topic has been discussed at length at each HOA meeting. Over the last year, the trustees researched and evaluated the merits of both electric and solar lighting. The decision was made to install a small number of solar streetlights, one in each plat of the subdivision, for homeowners to evaluate their effectiveness and value. The exceptions are plats 8, 9A, and 10, where Ameren lights already exist. These plats are all situated on the East side of New Halls Ferry.
A solar survey must be conducted first to determine where the lights will be installed. As is the nature of solar, the lights must be positioned to take advantage of access to sunlight. The solar company, BKJ Solar, will be employing drones above the subdivision to make that determination. The initial stage of installation should begin in Fall 2024.
